Many of the answers you have gotten are terrific, but the Pascack Valley area of Bergen County is a terrific spot for you. It includes the towns of Emerson, Westwood, Hillsdale, River Vale, Park Ridge, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, and Old Tappan. Most of these towns are great for commuting to NYC, with busses and trains, great schools and many lovely areas. I would say Oakland, NJ. However I must admit I am prejudice. I have three children who have attended or are currently attending Oakland Schools and I can not say enough about the education my children have received .Not to mention the dedication of the teachers who I feel have consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty time and again. As a Realtor I am familiar with all of Bergen County. Each area is unique and depending on what you’re looking for you really can't go wrong. However the property values and taxes can be drastically different from town to town. Having an experienced Realtor available to answer questions and guide the way can be invaluable. You've got some great suggestions so far, but having been raised in NYC and now living in Bergen County NJ, for the past 25 years, I'm going to suggest Bergen County. Each town has its own personality. Some are known for their "downtown area", some for their schools and sports programs for kids, some for their proximity to the highway or to parks. It really depends what you're looking for and your budget. And one of its main advantages is the various ways to commute to NYC, unlike Long Island which is famous for its traffic into town.

One of the best school systems in the country - as well an easy commute to NYC is in Ridgewood, NJ. It has a terrific hospital (Valley), is next to Paramus (shopping capital of the world) and is very, very safe. It's not cheap - but is well worth it. Housing stock ranges from the mid 400s to several million. It has a nice cultural mix as well. Commuters can chose from Express bus, local bus, Express and local train service on 2 lines as well as proximity to Route 17 and the Garden State Parkway. Some sections of the town are literally "walk to everything". It is the kind of town where you can park in the (lovely) downtown area and not have to lock your car. It's well worth researching...

I used to live in Mahasset, NY; just outside of Queens in Long Island. This is an excellent area, great community and have wonderful schools.

However, I believe the next town close to the city, Great Neck has even better school. One of the olympic figure skating champion, Sarah Hughes, came from there!

The only thing is both area tent to be pricy as not only there are great schools (a huge part of location), great community (second part of location) and they are also very close to NYC (3rd location)

Of course, you are always welcome to move to Marin County, CA (Could not resist the tempation to mention my town :-))

The answer will depend on a few other things. Like your price range for one thing.
