Do you know if you are a Realtor or a Real a tor?
I just saw a question , it was from Califorinia and removed quickly. I can not remember what it was about but I do know this is something that rubs me the wrong way, or hurts my ears.
There is no such thing as a Real a tor there is no such thing as a Real a ty company. Please - it hurts my ears. I do not go to a Doc a tor. do you?

As Mae West might have said - I don't care what you call me - just call me!!! ha.....
The turth is, when I was in training with my company 23 years ago, we were actually TAUGHT to say the word Realtor properly - with just 2 syllables! The word Realtor was part of my company's name, so they wanted to make sure we knew how to pronounce it. Sun May 25 2008, 19:52

For y'all that think it is in the enunciation of the word. NOT. My speech is a combination of Tennessee and Texas and I know the difference. You might call me a Red Neck. The A we are speaking of is a definite A not just brushed over. I just read a question in here referring to the persons Realator.
I don't mind the general public not know the difference. I do mind someone that writes it so many times a day, sees it so many times a day, hopefully says it so many times a day and is supposed to be IT (a Realtor) not knowing the difference. David we may be in the Realality business before we know it. LOL Sun May 25 2008, 17:35 Web Reference: http://www.Century21TheWoodlands.com

It may be a regional thing. There are so many accents and dialects running amok; I undertand what you are talking about. It really is no big deal- so long as it is spelled properly.

I would venture a guess that Don't Buy's attitude toward us is a result of a bad experience with one or more such agents.

While I agree that EVERY REALTOR should know how to pronounce the word correctly, and shows a bit of incompetence when they pronounce it incorrectly, I believe there are far bigger issues, that contribute to our overall negative image, to spend our time and energy on. You make a good point about the way many agents market their listings, but there is also the issue of the ease of entry into our field, and the lack of commitment required to carry the R badge. There should be tougher education requirements, and higher costs associated with entry, in order to weed out a large percentage of the lazy, uncommitted, and shady characters who are currently allowed to wear the same badge as you and I, the hard-working business owners who truly care about our clients' needs.
I would venture a guess that Don't Buy's attitude toward us is a result of a bad experience with one or more such agents. It's likely a justified attitude, although ignorance allows for lumping ALL Realtors into the same category of losers who should be cashiers at Wal-Mart. This not just a matter of semantics or pronunciation and it's also not a matter of not having anything better to do. First of all, the question was posted in the Agent2Agent section and as such it was meant for real estate professionals, not for the general public. I really don't care whether a consumer knows how to spell or pronounce Realtor, but when a real estate agent can't properly pronounce it, then that's really sad, to say the least as it portraits a certain amount of ignorance and I think that in turn contributes to the low opinion some have of our profession. Don't Buy is just one of those many who seem to think that we are uneducated (even though she is one of those consumers who does not know how to spell Realtor either). I think the main reason why real estate agents are put on the same level as used car sales people is because many of us still advertise real estate like used cars. Just look at the weekend newspaper real estate section and then compare it to the automotive classifieds section. Not much different. If you create the perception of selling used goods like that, you'll be perceived as that and that's why people think that it's ok for them to try to negotiate down the commission just like they negotiate down the price on a used car. Those who think that we are over compensated, obviously have never sold real estate for a living. I'd invite anybody to spend a week with me as I think it would not even take that long for them to realize how wrong they were.

It bugs me too when other agents in the office call themselves Real a tors. Anyone else can say it any way they want though as far as I'm concerned. I had an instructor tell a story I will always remember about this. He said he was as some function and this man said he was looking for a Re-la-tor. The professor heard some one else asks "what's a re-la-tor"? and the guy said, "you know, someone who sells homes." My instructor popped up and said, "I'm a Re-la-tor." and went on to list the old boy's farm and sell him land to build a new home on." What's in a name, huh?

I'd have to agree with 'Don't buy's' response. Do we really have nothing better to spend our time & energy on than getting into a symantics debate about the pronunciation of the Big R? Ever wonder why people have such a wonderful opinion of the professionals in our industry?
